Living next to a short-term rental can sometimes raise questions. Who are the guests? Are they following the rules? Is everything happening responsibly?
At StellarStay, we completely understand these concerns. In fact, we welcome communication from neighbors because it helps us maintain safe, respectful homes and good relationships within the community.
Recently, however, we experienced a situation that shows how small misunderstandings can quickly escalate into a chain of unnecessary actions.
🏡 What Happened
Late one evening, a neighbor reported through Airbnb that a party appeared to be happening at one of the homes we manage.
When a report like this is submitted through Airbnb, it immediately triggers a formal process. As operators, we must respond quickly and follow specific protocols.
These usually include:
• Contacting the guest immediately
• Investigating potential house rule violations
• Escalating the situation to Airbnb’s Safety team
• Preparing to involve local authorities if necessary
Because the report came through Airbnb’s official system, a safety case was opened automatically.
At the same time, we temporarily lost visibility of some monitoring devices at the property, which unfortunately made the situation appear even more suspicious from our side.
Meanwhile, the guest—who insisted nothing was happening—became understandably concerned and contacted the police.
When officers arrived, they confirmed something important:
The large gathering was actually taking place two houses down from the property, not at the home that had been reported.
🔄 How a Small Mistake Turned Into a Big Chain of Events
What started as a well-intentioned report quickly turned into a full escalation:
1️⃣ A neighbor submitted a report through Airbnb
2️⃣ Airbnb opened a safety investigation
3️⃣ Our team contacted the guests and began investigation procedures
4️⃣ The guests contacted the police out of concern
5️⃣ Police arrived and confirmed the gathering was happening at a different house
In the end, the guests staying in the property had done absolutely nothing wrong.
🚨 Why Reports Are Taken So Seriously
Platforms like Airbnb take neighbor reports very seriously — and so do we.
Once a report is filed through official channels, hosts and property managers must immediately investigate. These reports can trigger:
• Safety investigations by the platform
• Compliance reviews for the listing
• Possible reservation disruptions
• Stress and confusion for guests
That is why accurate information and attention to detail are extremely important before a report is submitted.
🔎 A Friendly Request to Our Neighbors
We truly appreciate neighbors who help keep their community safe. Responsible reporting is an important part of maintaining peaceful neighborhoods where short-term rentals operate.
At the same time, we kindly ask neighbors to take a moment to verify a few details before attributing activity to a specific property.
Helpful things to check include:
• Is the noise clearly coming from that house?
• Are people entering or leaving that specific property?
• Are vehicles actually associated with that home?
• Could the activity be happening at another nearby house or public space?
In many neighborhoods — especially those near parks or community areas — cars and gatherings can easily be mistaken for activity at the wrong address.
🤝 Working Together Makes Everything Better
Neighbors play an important role in helping ensure that short-term rentals operate responsibly.
When something truly is happening at one of our properties, we absolutely want to know so we can address it quickly.
But when activity is mistakenly attributed to the wrong house, it can unintentionally create stress for guests, unnecessary investigations, and confusion for everyone involved.
The goal is simple:
Safe neighborhoods. Responsible hosting. Fair treatment for guests.
🌟 Thank You for Looking Out
We sincerely appreciate neighbors who care about their community. Your vigilance helps ensure that homes are used responsibly and respectfully.
When everyone works together with clear communication and attention to detail, short-term rentals and residential neighborhoods can coexist successfully.
Thank you for being part of that effort.
