A guest reached out with a very understandable question:

“We’d ideally like to check out late (like 4pm late)… it’d be great not to lug our bags around all day.”

We hear this often from travelers with evening flights. If we could make it work in a reliable, predictable way, we absolutely would!

⏰ Why a 4 PM Check-Out Isn’t Possible

We always do our best to help, but there are two major reasons why a late-afternoon check-out typically isn’t feasible:

1. 🧼 Tight Cleaning Schedules Between Guest Stays

Most homes operate on a same-day turnover schedule:

  • Check-out: 11:00 AM

  • Cleaning window: 11:00 AM–4:00 PM

  • Next guest check-in: 4:00 PM

A 4 PM check-out eliminates the entire cleaning window and makes it impossible to prepare the home properly for the next guest.

2. 🤝 Agreements With Local Cleaning Teams

We have contractual obligations to provide cleaners access at 11:00 AM sharp. Their daily routes are carefully scheduled across multiple homes, and delaying one home leads to a domino effect for all the others.

These rules aren’t arbitrary—they keep operations efficient and ensure every guest arrives to a clean, well-prepared home.

🏢 Why Individual Hosts May Be More Flexible — And Why We Often Can’t Be

Some guests have stayed with individual hosts who manage just one property and may be able to make last-minute decisions quickly. That flexibility is possible because:

  • A single owner makes all decisions themselves

  • There’s no need to check with cleaning teams or other vendors

  • They may live near the property or clean it personally

By contrast, StellarStay manages dozens and dozens of homes across multiple states. Behind every small request, there may be:

  • Maintenance crews

🌍 And Sometimes… Owners Aren’t Immediately Reachable

Many property owners travel frequently—sometimes overseas—and can be in different time zones or even taking a digital detox. In some cases, it may take days for us to reach them for approval on special, non-standard requests.

Every StellarStay home includes clear house rules to help avoid confusion:

  • Early check-in:

    Sometimes possible for an additional fee, which goes directly to the cleaning service provider who sends extra staff to prepare the home earlier.

  • Check-out:

    Very strict 11:00 AM check-out time across all properties.

  • Late departure fee:

    $50 per 30 minutes past check-out time (House Rule #6).

These rules ensure fairness and protect schedules for both cleaning teams and incoming guests.

💡 The Best Solution: Adding One Extra Night

When a late check-out into the afternoon isn’t possible, the easiest and most stress-free solution is to extend the stay by one night. This allows:

  • A relaxed departure

  • No pressure or rushing

  • Cleaners to follow their scheduled workflow

  • Owners rely on full-night rates to cover mortgages, taxes, utilities, insurance, and maintenance

  • Airbnb withholds taxes and fees before releasing the payout

  • Cleaners require full payment regardless of how long the guest stays

  • Partial-day pricing is not supported within STR operational frameworks

So while pro-rating sounds simple, it isn’t operationally or contractually feasible.
